THE STEP 2--NOVICE CLASS IS INTENDED FOR THE SECOND YEAR STUDENT IN THE CLUB'S (TYPICALLY) 3-YEAR FLY FISHING INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM. THIS PROGRAM IS OFFERED TO CLUB MEMBERS ONLY AND DOES REQUIRE THE PAYMENT OF FEES TO COVER THE CLUB'S COSTS. THIS FLY FISHING PROGRAM IS INTENDED TO BUILD ON THE CLUB'S CASTING INSTRUCTION OFFERED FREE TO THE PUBLIC AND TO HELP STUDENTS IN THOSE MONTHLY CASTING CLASSES TO LEARN HOW TO FLY FISH IN A WIDE VARIETY OF FISHERIES IN CALIFORNIA AND OTHER STATES. IT IS ALSO A WONDERFUL WAY TO GAIN NEW FRIENDS AND LIFE-LONG FISHING BUDDIES.
THIS NOVICE CLASS IS DESIGNED TO ADVANCE THE BEGINNER IN THE ART OF FLY FISHING. IT IS PRIMARILY OFFERED TO CLUB MEMBERS WHO HAVE ATTENDED THE PREVIOUS YEAR'S "STEP 1 --BEGINNERS CLASS", OR ENROLLEES FROM LAST YEAR'S "STEP 2 --NOVICE CLASS" WHO WISH TO REPEAT THIS CLASS TO FURTHER POLISH THEIR SKILLS BEFORE MOVING UP TO "STEP 3 --INTERMEDIATE CLASS" NEXT YEAR.
THE CLASS WILL BE LIMITED TO 20 STUDENTS. BUT, IF THERE ARE STILL CLASS OPENINGS AFTER JANUARY 1st, OTHER CLUB MEMBERS POSSESSING APPROPRIATE BASIC FLY FISHING KNOWLEDGE AND CASTING SKILL (I.E., THEY KNOW HOW TO RIG UP AND CAST NYMPH AND DRY-DROPPER SET-UPS AND WADE FISH IN SMALL RIVERS) MAY BE ALLOWED TO JOIN THIS CLASS UPON APPROVAL OF THE NOVICE CLASS LEADER (call the RSVP Contact below).
THIS YEAR'S NOVICE CLASS WILL BEGIN WITH TWO DAYS OF INSTRUCTION, BOTH IN THE CLUBHOUSE & "IN" OUR PONDS, TO BE HELD ON (2) CONSECUTIVE SATURDAYS: FEB. 28 AND MARCH 7.
WE WILL TAKE AN ADVANCED LOOK AT GEAR, ENTOMOLOGY, READING THE WATER, KNOTS, & SIMILAR TOPICS. CLUB MENTORS WILL WORK WITH YOU "IN" THE PONDS TO HELP YOU LEARN TO CAST TIGHTER LOOPS & SINKING LINES AND TO HAUL & SHOOT LINE. THE 1ST CLASS DAY (FEB. 28) WILL BEGIN WITH IN-POND CASTING FROM 8:30AM TO NOON, SO BRING WADERS IN ADDITION TO YOUR FLY ROD.
WE WILL BE TEACHING BOTH THE BEGINNER AND NOVICE CLASSES ON THE SAME (2) DATES THIS YEAR, WITH EACH CLASS ROTATING BETWEEN THE CLUBHOUSE AND PONDS ON A HALF-DAY BASIS. A GOOD LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED FOR EVERYONE.
THREE MENTORED NOVICE FISH-OUTS ARE NOW SCHEDULED AND ONE OR MORE MAY BE ADDED. OUR FIRST FISH-OUT WILL BE LUK LAKE 0N SAT., MAY 2, WHICH INCLUDES A 2-NIGHT (FRI. & SAT.) STAY AT THE LAKE HOUSE. THIS IS A PRIVATE LAKE WITH GREAT FISHING FOR RAINBOW TROUT, BLACK BASS, AND SUNFISH. THE SECOND F/O WILL BE A GUIDED FLOAT TRIP ON THE LOWER SACRAMENTO RIVER ON SAT., MAY 16. THIS PART OF THE "LOWER SAC" IS PROBABLY THE BEST WILD RAINBOW FISHERY IN CA. OUR THIRD F/O WILL BE TO NF STANILAUS RIVER ON SAT., AUG. 15 OR SUN., AUG. 16, (sign up for this f/o for either Sat. or Sun. so that only half the class is getting mentored fishing each day). THE "STAN" IS A NICE RIVER WITH GOOD RAINBOW & BROWN TROUT FISHING.
THE FEE FOR THE TWO NOVICE CLASS DAYS IS $125, FOR WHICH YOU MUST SIGN-UP AND PAY ONLINE ON THIS 2/28 EVENT PAGE ONLY. YOU MUST BE A CLUB MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING BEFORE SIGNING UP FOR THIS CLASS (Dues paid by new members in late 2014 are good for all of 2015. Go to www.ggacc.org and click on JOIN at top of home page.)
THE COST OF THE INDIVIDUAL FISH-OUTS WILL BE LISTED ON THEIR SEPARATE EVENT PAGES. THE COST OF THESE FISH-OUTS WILL RANGE FROM $100-200, excluding any guide gratuities and campground or motel costs. STUDENTS WHO HAVE FIRST SIGNED UP FOR THE NOVICE CLASS DATES WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL WHEN THE FISH-OUTS ARE FIRST BEING POSTED ON THE CLUB WEBSITE FOR SIGN-UP AND PAYMENT.
Note: There may not be quite enough spots available for all 20 students to attend each fish-out. These spots can only be offered on a first come basis, so you are encouraged to sign up quickly. Students who have registered and paid for a fish-out and later learn that they can't make it for any reason will be solely responsible for finding their own replacement --including collecting from them whatever they can get for their spot. Club refunds for fish-outs are NOT generally possible.
THIS CLASS IS NOW CLOSED
