This Eastern Sierra Rondy is a 5 night backpacking trip (away from home at least six nights) to fly fish a small watershed located out of Mammoth, CA. This rondy is limited to 3 experienced backpackers (4 including the leader). We will fish both lakes and creeks along a 20 mile loop and spend more than one night at one campsite. The fishing will be walk & wading on the streams and casting from the lake shores.
The plan is to spend Monday night, Sept 4, in Mammoth and then hit the trail. We will meet at the Mammoth Ranger Station first and then hike out of and return to the Devil's Post Pile Ranger Station.
You will need all the normal backpacking gear to take care of yourself on the trail. We will share some gear such as stoves, water filters, etc. Bring your favorite fly rod for fishing small rushing creeks, a pooling meadow, and deep-shored lakes. There will be opportunities to fish with dries, nymphs, and streamers.
This Rondy is for experienced anglers ONLY and is NOT for current participants in the Learn to Fly Fish Program or other beginners.
You must also be an experienced backpacker and have the ability to hike with your pack up to 6-8 miles daily on rough trails.
The leader is an experienced backpacker. However, the expectation is that all participants in this rondy will be self sufficient.
The non-refundable fee for this rondy is $25. There will also be a small shuttle fee to the trailhead. Your food, lodging, and travel costs are all at your expense.
There will be a pre-meeting to discuss logistics, gear, shared food, etc. The date for this pre-meeting is tbd.
Additional information: This 20 mile loop has an elevation gain of about 2000' and tops out at about 9000' elevation. The first night campsite is about 2-3 miles in, where we camp on King Creek. Other days can be more uphill and longer. Pack light!
