This Rondy is scheduled for 7:00-5:00PM on Sunday, October 1, 2017, on the O'Neill Forebay at the San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area off CA-152 east of Gilroy (before Los Banos). You also have the option of staying later that evening and fishing independently.
This is a wonderful Striped Bass fishery. It holds the record for the largest Striped Bass caught in California.
Bill Scharninghausen will guide this Rondy. As a well known Northern California guide, Bill already guides our LTFF and Rondy surf outings.
We will meet up with Bill at 7:00am at the park entrance where all watercraft, waders, boots, and fins will be inspected by a park ranger for invasive species (be sure that all gear is clean and totally DRY!)
Personal watercraft will be required for this Rondy and wearing a PFD will be mandatory. The Forebay can be very windy so a good anchor may be helpful if you need to stay put while changing flies or rigging.
This particular Rondy is for experienced anglers only-- beginners and LTFF program participants are NOT invited. (A separate fish-out for LTFF Intermediate students is scheduled for the preceding day.)
Gear required: A float tube or pontoon boat, waders, at least one wading belt, PFD, 7-9wt fly rod, fast sinking shooting heads (Bill likes an integrated shooting head of 250-300 grains for a 7wt rod), 15-20# tippet, clousers or other striper flies, your own lunch and drinks. You don't need a lot of gear, keep it simple.
There are options for both camping and motels. The cost for this Rondy is $70.00, which includes a non-refundable $25 Rondy fee.
There will be two clinics associated with this rondy-- a float tube clinic and a "how to fish O'Neil Forebay" clinic. The former will be conducted at the club ponds on April 29; the latter will likely be held at the California Fly Shop in San Carlos on a date TBD.
