The plan for this Putah Creek Rondy on Saturday, October 14, 2017, is to show 6 club members how, where, and when to fish this technical nymphing wild Rainbow Trout fishery, which has large trout that like to eat mostly very small nymphs on light tippets. This is not usually a dry fly venue.
After meeting at Putah Creek Park Site 4 (see directions inserted in your registration confirmation email), there will be a short stream-side talk by the guide regarding hand-tying your own tapered leader to fish Putah Creek. You will then be split into three groups and will rotate through three different sections of the stream. Each of the three sections will have a mentor or guide to show you how to fish that area.
This Rondy is for experienced anglers ONLY and is NOT for current participants in the Learn to Fly Fish Program or other beginners. Some of the stream access and wading is difficult.
Gear suggestions are: 5 or 6 wt, 9' or 9-1/2' fly rods with floating fly lines, 3, 4 & 5x tippet (2x will be supplied), split shot, indicators, wading staff (mandatory), sturdy waders, wading boots (felt soles with studs are recommended), rain jacket, plenty of water, and your lunch.
We recommend purchasing at least two each of the following fly selection: Two-Bit Hooker size 16-18, Bead head Pheasant Tail Nymph 16-18, Zebra Midge 20-22, and any Soft Hackles 16-18.
Putah Creek is a "catch and release" tailwater fishery located about 1-1/2 hours from San Francisco. It is the closest wild trout fishery to the Bay Area and has some of the largest trout in California, where 30+ inch fish are caught every year.
The fastest way to drive there from SF is to take I-80N to the I-505N from Vacaville (toward Winters) and from I-505 take CA-128W (this is one exit after the Putah Creek Road exit). Stay on CA-128 past the town of Winters to the above meeting place on the river.
The cost for this rondy is $75, which includes a non-refundable $25 rondy fee.
