Spey Angler Program #89 --in ponds

  • 06 Jan 2018
  • 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
  • Anglers Lodge (boardroom) & center pond

GGACC's Spey Angler Program is unique, in that its goal is to actually teach anglers how to fish with a double-handed rod. This one weekend-long class is more than a casting lesson.

On Saturday we will cover the fundamentals of Spey in a classroom setting, then quickly move to the ponds to learn the fundamental Spey casts.

Sunday we head to Sacramento's American River and learn to fish the casts learned on Saturday. We then add sink tips to replicate real world conditions. Also covered are rotation fishing, river courtesy, and fighting and landing steelhead and salmon.

We meet Saturday at 9AM in the Anglers Lodge meeting room, dressed in waders (leave spiked boots outside), and after some classroom instruction, we'll get into the water from 10AM to 4PM with appropriate breaks. On Sunday we meet on the American River at 8:30 AM at a location in the Sacramento area to be provided to the group on Saturday (bring a camp chair for this).

Your instructors will be Bill Gallogly and other volunteers (possibly Bob Pauli and Steve Morikawa).

Enrollment is by approved appointment only in response to your request to be admitted into a specific class as emailed to Bill Gallogly at slazanger2@icloud.com and the subsequent submission and potential approval of the provided questionnaire regarding your fishing experience and single-handed casting skill.  Please list the word "Spey" in the subject line of your emails.

Each class will be limited to 5 students due to space issues in the ponds and on the river.

There is a $100 fee for this program. If notified of your approval for registering for this class, you will be given a club website link to make an online payment of this fee via credit card or PayPal. (Personal checks are no longer accepted.)

Bring your own waders, eyewear, hat, and lunches each day, but students may use the club's Spey rods each class day, both in the ponds and on the river.

A full description of this Spey Angler Program (and the follow-up Spey Improver Program) is posted on the club's website under the Events tab.
