GGACC's Spey Angler Program is unique, in that its goal is to actually teach anglers how to fish with a two-handed rod. This one weekend class is more than a casting lesson.

On Saturday we cover the fundamentals of Spey in a classroom setting, then quickly move to the ponds to learn the basic Spey casts. We meet Saturday @ 8:30AM in Anglers Lodge in our waders - leave spiked boots outside. We then move into the ponds from 9:30AM - 3PM with appropriate breaks.

Sunday we head to the American River in the Sacramento area and learn to fish the casts practiced on Saturday.  Midday we'll add sink tips to replicate real world conditions. Also covered are rotation fishing, river courtesy, and fighting and landing steelhead and other species. Sunday we start at 8:30AM ready to cast (in your waders, etc.) at one of several river locations to be provided on Saturday. We finish between 1-2PM.

Maximum class size is 6. You must be a GGACC member, and there is a $150 fee for the class to be paid online.

Your instructors will be Bill Gallogly, Bob Pauli, Steve Morikawa and Willy George.

Please note the following!  In order to derive the most benefit from this class, it is best to already have developed certain single-handed casting abilities.  We strongly advise that you are able to cast (with a single hand rod) a straight top leg on your forward loop (at a distance of approximately 35’), as well as being able to roll cast so that the fly line, leader, and fly all “turn over” while airborne.  If you have any concern as to your readiness for this Spey Angler class, one of the four Spey instructors will be available in the afternoon of GGACC’s “Free Casting Instruction” Saturdays every month.  Contact a Spey instructor and arrange for them to help you determine if this class is appropriate for you.  Attending the free Saturday classes combined with some practice should adequately prepare you for the Spey Angler class.

The club has loaner rods, reels and lines available. Bring waders, boots, wading staff, eye protection, hat, lunches for both days, and a folding chair for Sunday at the American River. Again, students are welcome to use the club's high-end, superbly matched Spey rods and lines each day.

Registration:  Effective November 15, 2018, all registration for the 2019 classes will be accomplished ONLINE Only using the GGACC Event calendar.  To register, first select the Saturday class date that you want on the calendar.  Registration (and participation) requires current GGACC membership and paying the $150 fee online via credit card or Paypal. The class will be open for registration when a large "Register" button appears on the opened calendar event. When the class is full (a maximum of 6 students), you will have the option of joining a waitlist for that class (there are often cancellations which will be filled from the waitlist).

Cancellation: If you have to cancel prior to 30 days from the class, your fee will be refunded.  Cancellation inside the 30 day window which causes the class size to drop below 4 students (minimum class size) will result in fee forfeiture.  Notify Bill Gallogly  (Slazanger2@icloud.com) as soon as you know you need to cancel.

Please check the GGACC events calendar for Spey Angler class dates.  There will be at least two Spey Angler classes in the spring and two in the fall in 2019.
